Awards Spotlight on Hentons Payroll

In the first in the series of ‘Awards Spotlights’, we take a look at the highly commended Hentons Payroll Team, who have been shortlisted as finalists in the Team of the Year Category at the 2021 Yorkshire Accountancy Awards.

The Hentons Payroll team is headed by Jessica Haunch, they are a credit to the company, consistently receiving positive feedback from clients. They continually go above and beyond, providing a timely service while striving to offer a best-in-class service, offering sound technical and legislative advice to clients, while making best use of the latest technology and software.

The payroll team consists of 5 employees; offers a fully comprehensive national payroll service to sole traders, partnerships and companies and prides itself on its reputation for reliability and efficiency.

The team are ‘BACS’ accredited and offer online secure employee portals/PAYE underpayment and overpayment enquiries with HMRC. Alongside a payroll & pensions bureau, Hentons also offer Payroll Consultations where assistance can be provided with training plans, audits on payroll, advice, and problem-solving.

Training and development are a key focus for the team, and team members are regularly kept up to date with new regulations. Three out of five staff are fully CIPP qualified, with the remaining two currently sitting their examinations.

Payroll Director, Jess Haunch, and the Payroll Team

Payroll Director, Jess Haunch, started at Hentons nearly 10 years ago, as a junior, she eventually found that Payroll was her perfect fit. Jess credits her enjoyment of building strong relationships with clients, team, and colleagues as the main factor in her length of service with Hentons.

Jess is a highly skilled Payroll expert, being highly organised and outgoing, which ensures that the teams drive to deliver a timely, efficient service remains the main priority. When asked about her outlook on her daily role, she responded:

‘A positive attitude gives you power over circumstances, instead of circumstances having power over you.’

The team has developed over the years, starting with 2 staff members and around 150 clients, it has now grown, under Jess’ stewardship, to having over 400 clients. Continuous training has been at the forefront of the team’s development, both internally and externally, with staff being afforded the opportunity to attend workshops on Employment Law to expand the teams offering.

A Challenging Year

The last 12-18 months have been challenging for most businesses due to the pandemic impacts. The introduction of the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) and Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) rebate scheme meant that the Payroll team had to adapt rapidly to the changing environment and increased workload.

As a team, they had to ensure their compliance knowledge was up to date to adapt to new procedures and process payroll under the correct legislation. Their technical abilities were tested during this time as guidance was open to interpretation and the software had not been developed to automatically calculate any of the new changes, this meant that all calculations had to be done manually. The teams time management and attention to detail became vital to ensure they maintained their high standards in meeting deadlines.

Jess and the team also made it a priority to ensure that clients received the service they expected by adapting to the changing environment and dealing with challenges as they arose.

Clients were contacted regarding the effect coronavirus would have on their business, and a joined-up approach meant that full service was received by clients. Whether this meant changing how they received their reports, for example, clients who previously received paper reports changed to email or portal reports, or by taking on new services to assist the client during their hardship (arranging BACS payments, dealing with the CJRS claim calculations/ submissions etc), nothing was too much. Time was spent ensuring that clients were supported in all payroll aspects, technical queries were dealt with, and clients were advised of all the necessary steps to take.

Speaking about the last year, Jessica Haunch said:

‘It has been a tough and challenging year, I am really proud of how the team have shown true resilience throughout. We have aimed to ensure all clients have been kept up to date with the Job Retention Scheme change and the ways in which we could help and support them throughout the year.’

Reaction to Shortlisting

Hentons are delighted to have been shortlisted five times as finalists for this year’s Yorkshire Accountancy Awards and are proud of the hard work and effort shown by staff across the business to make this possible.

The Payroll Team will be joined, at the Awards Dinner at New Dock Hall on the 8th July, by members of the Digital Team (Team of the Year), Tim Baum-Dixon (Partner of the Year) and Moosa Sacha (Support Staff of the Year).
